The obverse green with coat of arms to the left and  lion’s head watermark 

The reverse depicting recumbent lion statues named after two of the bank’s managers, “Stephen” left and Stitt” (right) on either side of the HSBC office headquarters.

  • William Wheatley Wagstaff 魏达 (1880-1962) Born in Keighley, West Yorkshire, Wagstaff was a sculptor, stone carver, and foundry owner. He was a student of the Royal Academy Schools from 1907-1910. Thereafter, Wagstaff moved to London. During WW1 he was employed as a draughtsman in an aircraft factory.  He joined the firm of 'Arts and Crafts' in Shanghai, China in 1920. He later opened his own sculpture, ornamental plaster and metal work studio and workshop in Shanghai. Notable works by Wagstaff: Lion statues at HSBC Hong; Dafydd ap Gwilym in Marble. Signed and dated 1919. City Hall, Cardiff.
